Today the Web serves as a universal information and communication infrastructure. We’re able to share data, documents, maps and apps based on web technologies. The efficient use of geoprocessing functionality for data analysis and presentation on the Web is an active topic in GIS science and application. The massive rise in available spatial data from mapping communities, sensor operators and public bodies has also spurred the demand by lay users and experts for readily available analysis and data processing tools. While Desktop and Workstation GIS are still widely used, there is also a trend towards sharing and reusing data processing and analysis workflows on the Web.Current developments are going in different directions:

• Formerly expert functionality is increasingly driving mainstream applications,
• Geoprocessing services are set up to harness computing resources and offer processing capabilities via standardized web interfaces,
• Communities produce new analysis functions on the web, share them on web-based platforms, and
• Legacy GIS products are “webified” to facilitate the connections with web applications,
• Major online GIS portals are currently evolving from the mere provision of maps and data to GIS portals with data processing capabilities as a major component, and
• Commercial online mapping tools (e.g. ArcGIS Online, Google Maps) and community platforms (e.g. OSM) are successively enhanced by offering geoprocessing functionalities and APIs.

This workshop attempts to link the different geoprocessing activities in the AGILE community. Depending on the interest among the participants, ideas and findings will be collected in a white paper or research agenda to foster further collaboration.

Call for Submissions (due April 15, 2014)

The workshop will be held as a full-day event. In the morning we will have two sessions with presentations on selected topics. Presenters are asked to submit brief abstracts (500-1000 words) in advance, which will be reviewed and selected based on relevance to the topic.

We are seeking contributions for the following topics:

• Presentations of innovative applications, on-going research, prototypes, use cases and best practices
• Status reviews of related technologies and standards related to web-based geoprocessing (WPS, cloud, service orchestration, etc.)
• Identification of requirements and research questions from different stakeholders such as national mapping agencies, data providers as well as spatial modellers and analysts.

We do also encourage you to present early status ideas and approaches, to carry this into the community and benefit from the feedback.

The afternoon will be reserved for discussions and breakout sessions. It concludes with a summary of the break-out sessions and a joint discussion about of further steps. In particular we would like to discuss the following topics:

• To what extent are geoprocessing functions used in current services and into which direction may they evolve in the future? What are current issues and requirements and how are they dealt with?
• Are there common approaches or conceptual models for web-based geoprocessing?
• Where do users and operators of such services see a potential for action or research? How do we need to evolve concepts and technologies?
