Hallo zusammen!
I am delighted to share the exciting story of my academic and professional journey, which reached a high point with my enriching internship at 52°North. I’m Mohamed Shamsudeen from the vibrant landscapes of southern India, Tamilnadu. Let me take you through my fascinating path that led to this fulfilling experience.
It all began with my Bachelor’s degree in Geoinformatics Engineering from Anna University, Tamil Nadu, in 2021. Eager to delve deeper into Data Science and Advanced Analytics, I pursued a one-year program at NOVA IMS, Lisbon, Portugal, in 2022. This quest for knowledge led me to the picturesque city of Münster, Germany, where I am currently immersed in a Master of Science in Geoinformatics and Spatial Data Science at the University of Münster.
My academic journey exposed me to various courses and projects, revealing a significant overlap with the talented individuals at 52°North. Fueled by curiosity, I explored the company and was captivated by its steadfast commitment to spatial information research. Inspired by their contributions, I set my sights on securing an internship at 52N. Eager to immerse myself in their projects, I diligently studied their published papers and project details, preparing for the exciting opportunity ahead. The journey to secure the internship was filled with anticipation and perseverance. “It was truly a dream come true!”
During my internship at 52°North, I actively contributed to European R&D projects DIRECTED and I-CISK, showcasing expertise in geospatial data management, data visualization, and web application development. A highlight of my internship was creating a data fabric component for the DIRECTED project, focusing on displaying information about extreme weather events. Using Streamlit, I designed a web application presenting river discharge and historical data from the European Flood Awareness System (EFAS) for Real World Labs (RWLs). The application featured integrated statistical calculations and log norm distribution, providing users with precise data exploration and interpretation capabilities. Simultaneously, I developed mock-ups and prototypes for an interactive and customized visualization of Copernicus Climate Data Store (CDS) raw data. My contributions extended to the I-CISK project, where I crafted a dynamic Shiny web application highlighting the maximum number of consecutive summer days and precipitation trends. Additionally, I created visualizations for information products based on CDS data.
Throughout these ventures, my skill set flourished as I delved into Python and R programming, sharpening my abilities to manipulate, analyze, and visualize geospatial data. Furthermore, I expanded my toolkit to include versatile tools and frameworks such as GeoNode, Geoserver, PostgreSQL, Docker, and Git.
Looking ahead, I aspire to pursue a Geospatial Big Data-related master’s thesis after my internship. My time at 52°North has been transformative, providing an ideal environment to enhance my skills, foster innovation, and contribute to cutting-edge spatial information research. The collaborative atmosphere and the company’s commitment to pushing boundaries have fueled my passion for geoinformatics.
Thank you, 52° North, for being a beacon of inspiration on my academic and professional odyssey!
