Something for everyone: A day of case studies, new features, discussions, and networking!
Approximately 70 participants made their way to the Applied Excellence Department’s Think Tank in Herne for the 3rd KomMonitor Community Day. The event offered a varied program including live demonstrations, practical reports, networking activities and insights into current and future developments.
KomMonitor in Youth Education
The Community Day began with an exciting live demonstration of KomMonitor’s use in Mühlheim. This practical report showcased KomMonitor’s ability to provide scientific support for critical issues, such as children’s education and health. A highlight of the presentation was the creative workaround proposed to enable visualization and analysis of time series data for point-based geodata. This workaround was applied to monitor school social indices. It demonstrated not only the functionality of the KomMonitor software, but also its capabilities.
Development Insights
As in the previous years, the developers at Bochum University of Applied Sciences and 52°North GmbH gave an in-depth insight into the software development of KomMonitor. This year’s highlights for new features and improvements were:
- Support for migrating to the latest multi-tenancy enabled version of KomMonitor
- The implementation of global filter and user favorites for improved data accessibility
- The progressing migration from AngularJS to Angular for the KomMonitor Web Client
- New configuration possibilities for customizing the layout of the Web Client
- Spatial filtering functionality for georesources
- A comprehensive extension of the reporting tool
- Improvements of the processing engine, which will be replaced by a combination of pygeopai and Prefect
Thanks to an important funding measure by MAGS NRW, a number of new developments, such as support for real-time data, a KomMonitor Dashboard and support for categorial data, are planned for this year.

Market of Opportunities
The afternoon was dedicated to networking. The “Market of Opportunities” allowed participants to interact one-on-one with a variety of KomMonitor stakeholders. The municipalities of Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr offered insights into KomMonitor for social planning and the analysis of care services for elderly residents. G.I.B. NRW and MAGS NRW were also present to further discussions on statewide cooperation in social planning and funding opportunities. Numerous discussions generated good ideas for new development, which the KOSIS AG KomMonitor collected.

A Look Into the Crystal Ball
The third Community Day concluded with a joint talk by G.I.B. NRW and MAGS NRW on the topic of “Where will KomMonitor be in 5 years”. Potential, future developments and application scenarios were discussed. The establishment of a strong community around KomMonitor, as well as good relationships between users, the KOmMonitor association, supra-regional actors such as G.I.B. and MAGS NRW, and the developer and service provider team 52°North GmbH and Hochschule Bochum form the basis for a successful future. Targeted funding measures at the state level also continuously contribute to spreading KomMonitor and improving the software.
We are looking forward to seeing what next year has in store for Kommonitor!
