The project aims to lay the groundwork for a platform-independent enviroCar app since it runs only on Android devices. The aim is to make it available for iOS users as well.
enviroCar is a citizen science community that collects, shares, and analyzes floating car data for traffic management and the environment. It examines the open data and estimates the track count, average speed, relative speed, CO2 emission, fuel consumption, and hotspot analysis.
During the Google Summer of Code 2021, I will be working on laying the groundwork for the platform independent enviroCar app using Dart and Flutter SDK by Google. We have made the choice based on the fact that Flutter enables the writing of beautiful and native performance UI components in the least amount of time. It also has an ever increasing community that is constantly improving it.
During my learning phase, I was attracted to a project idea that aimed to estimate various parameters in a driving journey, such as total fuel consumed, velocity or distance travelled. After some time of research, I started working on this project idea. For reference, I tested and evaluated some of the existing apps related to collecting floating car data in Google Playstore and hosted on GitHub. After a few days, I came across the enviroCar android app. I was delighted to see that features, such as car selection,GPS tracking, and logbook were implemented. These features were quite similar to my personal project goals. This made me feel that the enviroCar is the right place to contribute and enhance my knowledge.
A Python package to query and analyze enviroCar’s trajectory data
enviroCar is an open Citizen Science platform to collect, share and analyze floating car data for traffic quality and environmental monitoring. Its main components are the server back-end and the Android App. See envirocar.org for more details. This article focuses on the Python package envirocar-py, which enables users to query enviroCar’s open data and perform detailed analysis in Python.
