I am delighted to share the exciting story of my academic and professional journey, which reached a high point with my enriching internship at 52°North. I’m Mohamed Shamsudeen from the vibrant landscapes of southern India, Tamilnadu. Let me take you through my fascinating path that led to this fulfilling experience.
Hi! My name is Ricardo Buitenhuis, and in this little blog I will tell you about my time here at 52°North as part of my bachelor thesis in computer science. But first, who am I and how did I get here?
I grew up in the Netherlands and while doing my bachelors at Avans University of Applied Sciences in s’-Hertogenbosch, I was convinced I wanted to finish my studies in Germany, for the simple fact that I like the German language. As someone with just a background in computer science, I knew the geo side would be new to me, and a challenge, but I thought it would be fun to combine software development and geography. So after extensive googling I found 52°North and just applied!
52°North’s contribution to the OGC Disaster Pilot 2023
Climate change is increasing the likelihood of natural disasters and their severe environmental and social consequences worldwide. This is why preparedness for such events is becoming increasingly important. The objective of the Open Geospatial Consortium’s Disaster Pilot 2023 [1] was to provide first responders and decision makers with tools to enable them to better prepare for and respond to hazardous situations. The availability of decision-ready data was addressed as a key element of preparedness.
After the last in-person meeting in Munich in 2019 and the virtual meetings during the Corona break, the Google Summer of Code team once again invited Org Admins and Mentors to come together and share their experiences.
The summit took place from Friday, October 13th – Sunday, October 15th 2023 at the Google Moffet Park Campus in Sunnyvale, California.
