About Me

Hi there, I’m Ashwanth Kumar, an open-source enthusiast with a passion for learning and contributing to amazing technologies. I recently graduated from Visvesvaraya University as a software developer and have been actively exploring various technologies, aiming to keep up with the latest trends and make my mark in the open source community.

During the Community Bonding Period with 52°North, I had a fantastic experience connecting with my mentor and diving into the main goals and future perspectives of KomMonitor. It was an enlightening experience that helped me frame a clear path to contribute to the project.

52N @ EGU General Assembly

EGU 2023

Vienna! Known for its outstanding beauty, its distinct culture, and the EGU General Assembly. Well, ok, EGU is probably only in the minds of people with a geoscience background, because EGU is the European Geosciences Union, and the General Assembly is the annual conference full of oral talks and poster presentations. The conference is not just big, it is huge. This year (April 23 – 28, 2023), more than 17,000 people from research and industry gathered in Vienna to disseminate their findings, network with familiar and unfamiliar faces, and listen to presentations covering all disciplines in earth sciences. This makes the conference one of the few opportunities to reach such a diverse audience and get feedback or inspiration from many different experts.

So, how can such a conference be complete without 52°North? Short answer: It can’t! For this reason, 52°North’s research software engineers Katharina Demmich and Markus Konkol headed south to talk about research data infrastructures in the context of the I-CISK project, harmonized sharing of ocean observing data, and communicating data quality through open reproducible research in the context of the MINKE project.

EGU General Assembly 2023

Building an Open Source Infrastructure for Next Generation End User Climate Services

At the recent EGU conference, 52°North presented the current status of the cloud-based web platform implemented within the  I-CISK project. The I-CISK project aims to bridge the gap between science and society in the development of adaptation strategies to climate change. Although various research studies are currently addressing this challenge, the knowledge gained rarely reaches society in a format that can be easily understood and applied to adapt to climate threats. Therefore, the I-CISK consortium follows a co-creation process in which stakeholders as well as software infrastructure developers and climate modelers work in close collaboration. Together with GECOsistema, 52°North is leading the implementation of an open source web platform that will provide climate indicators to stakeholders in a comprehensive way. The platform will connect modeling tools for weather forecasts and climate projections with local data sources as well as available climate services, e.g. from the Copernicus Earth observation program.

52°North presents work done on agile methodologies

The Cos4Cloud project partners met February 2 -3, 2023 in Barcelona to discuss the results and further cooperation in a last project meeting. Over the last three years, we have been working intensively on methodologies and services to improve citizen science platforms (citizen observatories), which will boost the quantity and quality of citizen science data and ensure their long-term viability. Learn more about the H202 project at the Cos4Cloud web site. 52°North presented a wrap-up of the agile methodologies developed and refined during the course of the project.
