52°North seeks student applications for the Google Summer of Code 2013

52°North is thrilled to announce that it has been chosen the second year in a row to be a mentoring organization for the Google Summer of Code 2013 (GSoC)! The Google Summer of Code is a global program that offers students stipends to write code for open source projects. Google pays the stipend recipient $ 5.000,- for 3 months of software development for 52°North. A mentor from a 52°North partner organization supervises the student during this period.

As such, we now look for students who are interested in writing code for various 52°North projects. If you are interested in writing code for software developed by the 52°North communities, please have a look at https://wiki.52north.org/bin/view/Projects/GSoC2013.

Student Application opens on April 22, 2012 at 19:00 UTC – but the discussion can start right now!

Visualization Tool Assessment

The UncertWeb FP7 EU project has developed methods and open source tools for uncertainty propagation in web-enabled environmental modeling chains. One of these tools visualizes probabilistic spatial and spatio-temporal data in a browser. To assess the usability of this visualisation tool, the Institute for Geoinformatics prepared an online survey.
Please take the time and spend 20 minutes to get to know the tool and give your opinion about it! We will need this before Jan 15, 2013 23:59 UTC.

For those of you who are curious, yes, this is the tool that will continue under the name GREENLAND!

Greenland for Visualisation of Geospatial Data

The Geostatistics community is proud to present its newest software project: Greenland. Greenland is a client-side tool to render quality-aware geospatial data. It is implemented as a JavaScript web application using OpenLayers and ExtJS, leveraging HTML5 features, such as the canvas element. It is based on work originally started within the UncertWeb project – “the visualization client” – and is now also developed further within the GeoViQua project. Therefore we decided to join efforts, move the code up in the repository to the main level, and give the software a new name (and without acronyms this time!).
