Introduction

With only a few days left, the enviroCar SPARQL endpoint comes closer than ever to becoming reality. Much work and research has been put into an immensely important segment of the 52°North enviroCar project – the data. This project involves all kinds of data from standard relational to semi-structured to geo-spatial, which makes it both versatile and extendible. In a nutshell, we extract enviroCar’s data from its database form, convert it to the Linked Data format, store it in a triple store and serve it to the world as an Endpoint. SPARQL endpoint and Interoperability of enviroCar data : Midterm Report

Introduction

The enviroCar SPARQL endpoint is a feature that enables the enviroCar data to be queried in RDF. This feature creates an open endpoint for crawlers and other bots and allows them to crawl the data and let the data be part of the LOD cloud. With the enviroCar server’s current architecture, it is possible to query the data by converting the entities on the fly into RDF when a particular kind of request is made. Over the past few weeks, I’ve embarked on the task of moving the data from mongoDB (the database of choice for the enviroCar server) and cloning the entire database content to a raw data type, independent of database formats. My task also involved solving the problem of trying to remove the tight coupling of frameworks with the generation and retrieval of data. This would make more data interchanging processes more commonly known as ETL processes. This is a design for future implementation and can be found here.

Linked Open Data (LOD) is a set of best practices for publishing raw data on the Web. It makes your data highly structured and very easy to incorporate with the other datasets.

The enviroCar platform has a large and varied amount of data describing different entities and can currently be served as Linked Open Data with a detailed API reference here. There are many entities involved, such as cars, people, speed, dates and so on. If these entities are served as Linked Open Data, they can be very easily connected to datasets which describe them, such as DBpedia.
