52°North completed its third year in a row as a Google Summer of Code mentoring organization. This year we experienced some growing pains. After being thrilled to receive a record number of students – thanks Google for allotting us six (!) spaces in 2014 – 52°North was disappointed that two of the students disqualified themselves within the first few weeks. Nevertheless, we were particularly pleased to work with new mentors from ITC (The Netherlands), Hunter College (USA) and the Jacobs University (Bremen, Germany) and four students this summer. 52°North’s overall goals for the projects were to extend software with strategically promising features and to improve usability of the software.
Once again, 52˚North had the excellent opportunity to participate in Google’s Summer of Code. We had four awesome projects, all of which were quite successful – so a big thanks to all our students and mentors! This was my first year with 52˚North and Google Summer of Code. I am pleased to report that it has been a positive and valuable experience for me and I hope the same can be said for the students and other mentors.
