In the early 52°North days, we managed our source code on a public open source platform: SourceForge. We started with CVS (classic!), switched to SVN (wow, I can delete folders!) and after a while we decided to host all 52°North related source code in our own IT environment. However, keeping an eye on what was going in the VCS world, we felt that this approach was outdated and started to look into Git and GitHub. This initiative was mainly driven by 52°North staff developers’ curiosity and the promise of a better development work flow. We found GitHub provided very easy collaboration, communication and outreach dedicated to source code and very much in line with the 52°North philosophy. After a few test runs, we started to migrate the first of our active software projects to GitHub.

Three new Journal Articles on Sensor Plug & Play
I’m happy to announce that we got three new articles accepted for publication:
- Diaz, L., A. Bröring, D. McInerney, G. Liberta & T. Foerster (2013, accepted): Publishing Sensor Observations into Geospatial Information Infrastructures: A Use Case in Fire Danger Assessment. Environmental Modelling & Software. [paper]
In this article, an approach is presented to improve the registration of sensors and the publication of their observations via the Web Processing Service (WPS) and the Sensor Observation Service (SOS) interface. Therefore, those services are combined with our Sensor Interface Descriptor (SID) concept. The approach is evaluated by applying the developed approach to the example of integrating in-situ weather observations into the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) for assessing fire danger in Spain.
enviroCar crowd-funding initiative – spread the word!
enviroCar invites you to use your car’s sensor data for exploring the effect of your driving style on environmental aspects such as fuel consumption, CO2 production, or noise emission. All you need is an OBD2 adapter (available at Amazon starting from 18,-€) and our enviroCar App.
enviroCar enables you to share your car’s sensing data. With your data you can contribute to better urban planning and smarter cities and answer questions such as:
- what are the actual spatial characteristics of fuel consumption in your city?
- how to optimize traffic planning to reduce emissions effectively?
- what to learn from average speed maps?
