Which Format?

In ILWIS 3 we had a lot of hassle with imports and exports. ILWIS 3 had its own format and everything had to be converted to this format or exported from ILWIS 3 to be usable in another package. Though there was a ‘use-as’ method (for raster), which basically used the data in its orignal format, it had its limitations. Furthermore, there was always lots of work involved (for the programmers) in getting a format ‘correct’. The documentation of formats is often mediocre, so a lot of guessing about how to interpret a certain format took place. The usage of the GDAL library helped a lot, but the implementation of a new format was still a hassle. And then there were the service/remote data sources, which play an increasingly important role these days. The map panel in Ilwis4 is in some way different from the map window in ILWIS 3 and in other ways very similar. It is still under development, so things will change, but I think it might be interesting to show the direction it is taking.more >

New data structures in Ilwis-objects

One of the goals with Ilwis-objects was to update our data structures. The IWLIS 3 design is servicable, but these days things like multi spectral data, spatial temporal data sets, multi-dimensional feature sets are more common than when ILWIS 3 was designed. Not only the data structures for the data sources needed an upgrade, but also the supporting objects like domains and representations. more >

The Data Panel

Apart from some decoration around it, the main Ilwis4 window has two parts: the workbench and the data panel. The workbench has been discussed, so this time I want to show some things about the data panel. The data panel is where, as the name implies, all the data is. Maps, tables, catalogs etc., the data panel is where they are rendered. In ILWIS 3, such a thing didn’t exist. The main window had a side bar for things like navigation and operations and an MDI (multiple device interface) part for all the folders that you want to access. Apart from the fact that MDI is considered to be old fashioned these days, the framework we use simply doesn’t have it. So another solution had to be found.more >
