Hello all,
I welcome you all to the introductory blog post on my Google Summer of Code‘s project that I will be working on over the next few weeks. Before I begin, a bit of an introduction about me 🙂
I am a graduate student at the University of Calgary (Yes, I get to see the Canadian Rockies from my window!). I am pursuing my Master’s degree in Geomatics Engineering and working towards revising and improving the Open Geospatial Consortium’s (OGC) SensorThings API standard for my thesis.

enviroCar Mobile is an Android application for smartphones that can be used to collect Extended Floating Car Data. A Bluetooth OBD2 adapter is used to communicate with the app while driving. This enables read access to data from the vehicle’s engine control. The data is recorded along with the smartphone’s GPS position data. The driver can view statistics about his drives and publish his data as open data. The latter happens by uploading tracks to the enviroCar server, where the data is available under the ODB licence for further analysis and use. The data can also be viewed and analysed via the enviroCar website.

The project aims to implement a UI for data privacy and control that will provide the user autonomy to control the data shared through the app and informed consent. For more detailed information, please visit my introductory blog post and GitHub. In the past few weeks, I’ve implemented the UI to inform users how their location data is processed and fixed the bugs.

The enviroCar app makes use of various 1st and 3rd party open source libraries to provide various functionalities along with a seamless experience to users. My goal is to update all the deprecated libraries currently implemented by replacing them with superior alternatives or updating them to their latest stable release.
